ACTION TEXT ALERTS
These are jobs that we need done on a periodic basis, sometimes on short notice. If you sign up for "action alerts" on the volunteer form, you will be added to a list of people who get texts or emails when we need help with the following:
Take shifts at one of our neighborhood water stations, stocking and distributing water.
Talk face-to-face with community members to help us share out about the services we provide and the work we do.
Take calls on the water hotline, helping set up assistance for community members whose water has been turned off.
Invite a member of We the People of Detroit to come speak on water justice, youth leadership, or community resistance at your school, place of worship, or social group.
Get trained through the Speakers Bureau (part of the People's Water Board) to talk about water and the issues surrounding it.
We the People of Detroit has operated an ALL VOLUNTEER Water Rights Outreach program including:
- Detroit Water Drop Program (Water Crisis Hotline)
- Establishment of 4 Emergency Water Stations
- Helped hundreds of Detroit’s get water turned on and make payment arrangements
- Raised water donations of over 10,000 gallons of water
- Delivered thousands of gallons to the elderly and nursing mothers
- Helped get the word with door-to-door “Taking it to the Streets” canvassing and phone banking project
Our volunteer work in cooperation with the People’s Water Board Coalition has helped lead to moratoriums on water shut-offs and filing of the lawsuit against the Department of Water and Sewerage Department.
